Commute Alternatives

Think outside the car
Long Island employers understand that commuting can be the most stressful part of the day. That’s why many of them offer commute alternatives that make sense. Click on the links below for more information about each alternative.

Commute Alternatives:

Telecommuting
Telecommuting is the act of performing one’s work at a location other than the office, usually the employee’s home. The employee must have an environment that is conducive to accomplishing their work tasks and have minimal distractions. Telecommuting is a voluntary work alternative that may be appropriate for some employees and some jobs. Telecommuting is an important part of the solution to traffic congestion because the car never leaves the home.

Compressed Work Schedule
A Compressed Work Schedule is an arrangement between the employer and employee to work their normal work week hours in fewer days. This translates into a full-time employee, required biweekly to work 80 hours, is scheduled by their employer to work those hours in less than 10 days. This results in less cars arriving at the work place during peak hours on a daily basis.

Flextime
Flextime allows employees to start work earlier or later in the morning with a corresponding ending time to avoid driving during peak hours. Usually there are "core hours" during which all employees are expected to be working, like 10 AM to 3 PM. Flextime is good for employees because it enables them to find a better balance between their professional and personal responsibilities and commitments.
